Tayyaba Zain is working hard!

Tayyaba studying in a classroom at Amar Jyoti School
Dear Oliver,

Tayyaba is a 10 year old girl studying in the Multiple Disability Section at Amar Jyoti School. Tayyaba is a mentally challenged girl. She suffered from jaundice when she was one and a half months old and suffered from thyroid problem at the age of six months. To date, she is getting medications and treatment. She has been coming to Amar Jyoti School since November 4, 2008. Tayyaba is good at academics and is motivated to learn and improve. Her achievements however, have been gradual.

Tayyaba comes from an economically underprivileged family. Her father sells clothes in a small shop and her mother is a housewife. Tayyaba has two other siblings who are being supported by her parents. It is difficult for Tayyaba’s parents to support her education and medical needs. However, they are motivated to send Tayyaba to school. They attend the PTA meetings regularly to discuss issues related to Tayyaba.

According to her teacher, Tayyaba was a hesitant child and lacked basic knowledge of mathematical and language concepts when she began at Amar Jyoti. For example, she would keep quiet when anyone greeted her. She only knew the alphabet in English and could write 1 to 50 in mathematics but did not recognize the numbers individually.

Tayyaba’s teacher’s motivation and efforts have helped her to achieve confidence which is reflected in her academic performance and daily activities. Currently, in academics, she can do addition with carry over in mathematics and write three letter words in Hindi. She is also good at picture and object recognition. She follows instructions well in class. For example, every morning she counts the number of students present in the class. She also subtracts the number of students present in the class from the total number of students registered to find out the number of students absent.

Besides this, she picks up on activities for daily living such as buttoning-unbuttoning of shirts, tying shoe laces, and folding clothes.  The next project is to teach her to make a bread and butter sandwich independently. Her social skills have improved and she responds when someone greets her.  She now also takes responsibilities such as arranging files kept in the classroom cabinet and getting water for her class teacher. She is good in extracurricular activities as well. She especially likes music and dance. She also recites poems. In group games, she likes to play musical chairs.

Thank you Oliver for your kind support of Tayyaba. Your generous donation will allow her to continue her studies at Amar Jyoti School!
