Abhijeet Sarkar is working hard at Amar Jyoti School

Abhijeet Sarkar is a six year old boy studying in the Multiple Disability section at Amar Jyoti School. He has been coming to Amar Jyoti since January, 2008. He has Down Syndrome and some problems with walking. Despite these issues, Abhijeet is eager to come to school and get involved in different activities.

Abhijeet comes from an economically underprivileged family. His father is a mechanic and his mother is a housewife. It is difficult for Abhijeet’s parents to support his education and medical needs. They are however, motivated to send Abhijeet to school and help him every way they can. The parents regularly attend the PTA meetings and discuss issues concerning Abhijeet.

Abhijeet was a very reserved child when he first joined the Amar Jyoti School. He would hardly talk to anybody and had a low attention span. He would not sit in one place for more than ten minutes and would tend to run away. He did not have any writing skills and he could not hold a pencil.

Abhijeet’s teachers have made tireless efforts to start with Abhijeet from a scratch. Abhijeet’s biggest achievements has been in his verbal communication. He can recognize fruits, vegetables, body parts and name them verbally. He even recognizes body parts such as an elbow and names them. His teacher brings real fruits and vegetables from home to show them to Abhijeet and sits with him patiently for an hour everyday to help him learn the names. Abhijeet now remembers and calls all his classmates by their first name. He is quick in grasping instructions and responds well. He now is learning to draw straight lines as he has attained a good grip holding his pencils.

Abhijeet is a very good drummer. He also likes coloring. With time, his social skills have also improved. He talks with his peers more often. He also asks for permission every time before entering the room. There has been a change in Abhijeet’s eating habits as well. Earlier he just used to gulp down the food without chewing it but now he has stared chewing it properly before swallowing.
