Karan did very well on his exams!
posted December 17, 2009
Dear Mohan,
Karan is a nine year old boy studying in third grade at the Amar Jyoti campus in Gwalior, India. He has a pleasant personality and is regular in coming to school. Because Karan comes from an economically under privileged family, it is difficult for his parents to pay his tuition. Mohan, your gift of a year of tuition is a huge help for his family! His father is a carpet maker and his mother is a maid. However, they are very motivated to send Karan to school and help him in everyway they can. His mother regularly attends PTA meetings.
Though Karan is shy by nature, he is very good in reading and writing. Since arriving at Amar Jyoti, Karan has shown good improvement. He did very well in his quarterly exams, scoring 176 out of 200! Karan is a very good artist, enjoying painting and drawing most. He is enthusiastic and likes to get involved in most of the class room activities. Thanks Mohan for your kind support of Karan and Amar Jyoti!

Working together we can make a difference!
posted December 8, 2009

A small group of people has truly made a difference in the life of Ragini, a five year-old girl with down syndrome. When she started at school she was unable to concentrate unless a teacher was directly interacting with her, helping her learn new skills. She could not sit still. She was hesitant to mix with other students.
Slowly, the gifted teachers at Amar Jyoti school have helped Ragini come out of her shell. She is becoming more social and her motor coordination is improving, such that she is now able to fill a bag with blocks. Amar Jyoti school is really helping Ragini.
She still faces one major obstacle, however: her family cannot afford her school fees.
Megha, Sneha, Hazel, Sameer, Bruce and Brian all donated tuition to Amar Jyoti school. These gifts were combined to sponsor a full year of tuition for Ragini. She now can continue to receive the specialized attention she requires at school.
When we work together we can make a difference!

Sagar is back at Amar Jyoti!
posted December 7, 2009

Sagar is a 14 year old boy studying in 2nd standard (second grade) at Amar Jyoti School. At a young age, he contracted polio in his right leg. He is a social, well mannered boy. Sagar comes from an economically under privileged family. His father is a garland maker and only earns daily wages. Sagar and his father live in a small rented room.
Sagar had to leave Amar Jyoti two years ago because of family problems. He did not attend any school during this time. Recently, he has been able to rejoin Amar Jyoti, and is beginning to improve over time. He has been getting special attention from his teachers in all subjects.
When he first started back at Amar Jyoti, he was not very regular in coming to school. Sagar and his father have started coming to Amar Jyoti together for counseling which has helped improve Sagar’s attendance. If Sagar comes to school more regularly, he can make great progress in studies as he holds potential to do much better.
It was the kind donation of a year of tuition from Madhu that will allow Sagar to continue his studies at Amar Jyoti. Thank you so much for your support of Sagar and Amar Jyoti!

Krishan will start first grade!
posted November 24, 2009

Krishan is a ten year old boy studying in the special section at Amar Jyoti School. Despite his Cerebral Palsy, he is motivated to come to school and is making sincere efforts to improve his performance. He has been coming to Amar Jyoti for two years.
Krishan comes from an economically underprivileged family. His father is a daily wage laborer and his mother is a home maker. It is difficult for his parents to support his education and medical needs. His parents are concerned about his education and want him to be able to continue.
When he first arrived at Amar Jyoti, Krishan was an academically average child. Due to his Cerebral Palsy, he does not have full control over his hand movements which affects his handwriting. His teacher had to be patient with him and pay individual attention to him.
Krishan’s writing skills have improved due to the motivation of his teachers. He is slow in writing but understands the concepts well. He successfully completed his Nursery class and is now studying at the kindergarten level. He is learning sentences with three and four words in English. In Maths, he can do simple addition and has been recommended to be integrated into the grade 1 level class.
He likes drawing and colouring pictures. In sports, he likes playing badminton and carom board. His communication skills have improved with time and he interacts well with his peers.
Jennifer, your very generous donation of a year of tuition will relieve the financial difficulties facing Krishan’s family and allow Krishan to continue his studies at Amar Jyoti. Thank you for supporting Krishan and Amar Jyoti!

Making a difference on and off the court
posted November 23, 2009

Rohit is a fourteen year old boy who loves to play basketball. Rohit also has polio, but he hasn’t let that stop him from getting involved in sports at Amar Jyoti school. In the six years he has attended Amar Jyoti, his teachers have noticed a steadily increasing level of confidence in Rohit, both in the classroom and on the court.
Rohit’s father is a rickshaw driver, which makes it impossible for him to afford Rohit’s tuition. Ravi, your generous contribution has sponsored an entire year of Rohit’s tuition. During that year he will continue to improve his stellar handwriting, work on fractions and, of course, play basketball. But more importantly, he will develop his self confidence on and off the court.
